HISTORY OF WORTHY WAGE DAY
Teachers are among the lowest-paid and least-valued professionals in the United States. There is a history behind the term “worthless wages” and the educator insurrection that it sparked. The Worthy Wage Day was established in 1992 as an act of teacher activism in response to the normalisation of unjust compensation over the decades. It was a day of community events supported by over 120 organisations in 30 states, which included rallies, teach-ins, and much more. It gained national attention after being highlighted on “CBS Nightly News.” It became an annual event for stakeholders to continue to raise their voices and advocate for fair compensation for a largely invisible workforce, in recognition of the fact that this movement would not achieve success immediately.
Despite this movement, the U.S. economic system did not recognise the teaching industry’s value for some time. In 1994, the Economic Policy Institute (EPI) reported that teachers earned 1.8% less per week than other employees. They had no choice but to continue disrupting the status quo. This lasted at least ten years. From 1991 to 2001, protests, rallies, and media campaigns were prevalent.
In the early to mid-2010s, teachers’ salaries dominated public discourse. In 2014, additional research revealed that fifty percent of the teaching workforce relied on food stamps to survive. In 2016, at least 20,000 West Virginia educators walked out of their classrooms until the state met their insurance and salary demands. In 2018, tens of thousands of Oklahoma teachers seized the state capital, pledging not to leave until legislators address education funding. As of today, the fair compensation movement in the teaching profession is an ongoing effort to convince the government to make necessary adjustments. Worthy Wage Day serves as a reminder to all that teachers deserve much more compensation for their contributions.
