Hackers did not just increase attacks in number they made attacks smarter, faster, and more harmful. Cybercrime touched normal people, hospitals, banks, stock markets, government systems, and even national security.

Governments and private companies had no choice but to act strongly. They added new rules and security steps to protect data. This year clearly showed that cybersecurity is not only a problem for tech experts anymore.

In 2025, hackers started using new tools like artificial intelligence and deepfake technology. Fake emails, calls, and messages now look very real. Many people could not tell the difference between real and fake messages anymore.

An IBM report showed how costly cyberattacks became. It said the average security breach cost reached $4.9 million, which is about Rs 44.04 crore in 2025. This marked a rise of nearly 10% compared to 2024. USAID shared even more worrying numbers. It estimated that global cybercrime losses could reach $24 trillion, or around Rs 1,992 trillion, by 2027.

February 2025: ByBit crypto exchange attack

In February 2025, hackers linked to North Korea attacked the Dubai-based crypto exchange ByBit. This became the biggest crypto theft in history. Hackers stole about $1.5 billion worth of Ethereum tokens, which equals around Rs 125 billion. Investigators found that the hackers used a weakness in free storage software and phishing tricks. Reports said hackers laundered about $160 million, or Rs 1,280 crore, in just 48 hours.

June 2025: Massive data leak in China

In June 2025, a shocking data leak surfaced in China. Security Discovery and Cybernews reported that researcher Bob Dyachenko found a huge 631GB database with no password protection. The database contained personal data of nearly 4 billion people. Experts believe someone collected this data on purpose to build detailed citizen profiles.

September 2025: Jaguar Land Rover cyberattack

In September 2025, British carmaker Jaguar Land Rover suffered a major cyberattack. The attack stopped vehicle production completely. Over three months, the company lost about £680 million, which equals around Rs 82.93 billion.

In October 2025, a website and Telegram bot named Proxyearth created panic. HackRead reported that the tool claimed to fetch full personal details of Indian citizens just by entering a phone number. The data included name, address, email, and Aadhaar number. Early checks showed much of the data was correct, raising serious data safety questions.

Stockbroking firm Angel One confirmed a data leak in 2025. Dark web monitoring showed hackers accessed client data from some of the company’s AWS systems.

Dance of the Hillary

A malware called Dance of the Hillary made headlines in India. Reports said Pakistani hacker groups spread it. The malware entered systems through videos or documents and stole sensitive data.
