Suicide attempt at Mecca: A man suffered injuries after he tried to take his own life by jumping from an upper level of Masjid al-Haram in Makkah. Saudi authorities confirmed the incident on Friday. A security officer also got hurt while trying to save the man and stop him from hitting the ground.
The Emirate of the Makkah Region said the incident happened on Thursday. The man moved close to the edge on one of the upper floors of the Grand Mosque. Security teams noticed his actions quickly. Members of the Special Force for the Security of the Grand Mosque rushed to the spot at once to stop the situation from becoming worse.

Security officer hurt during Rescue attempt
During the rescue effort, a security officer stood below and tried to break the man’s fall. Because of this brave act, the officer suffered fractures. Authorities said both the injured man and the officer were taken to the hospital right away for treatment.
In an official statement, the Emirate of the Makkah Region said, “The officer’s injury was limited to fractures, and the required official and legal procedures were completed in accordance with applicable regulations,” Officials did not share the man’s name or details about his current health condition.
Videos of the incident later spread on social media. The footage showed the man walking toward the edge and then jumping. Security guards reached the area within seconds. One guard positioned below tried to stop the fall, which led to injuries to both people.
Religious leaders urge respect for mosque rules
After the incident, the Chief Imam of the Grand Mosque, Sheikh Dr Abdur Rahman As Sudais, spoke to pilgrims and visitors. He asked everyone to follow mosque rules and respect the holiness of Masjid al-Haram. He urged worshippers to focus on prayer and good Islamic behavior.
He warned against actions by a small number of people who attempt to jump from high places inside the mosque. He said such actions are considered suicide and are strictly forbidden in Islam. He reminded people that protecting life is a core teaching of the faith.

The Saudi Ministry of Interior said trained security teams acted very fast and kept the situation under control. Thousands of worshippers were present at the time, and officials ensured their safety. Authorities confirmed that legal steps are now being completed under Saudi law.
Masjid al-Haram remains under constant watch. Emergency teams stay on duty day and night to protect visitors at one of the most important religious sites in the world.

Officials also recalled that similar incidents happened in the past. In 2017, a man died after jumping from an upper level near the Kaaba during prayers. Since then authorities have improved surveillance and emergency response to prevent such events from happening again.
