DoorDash Driver Richard Pulley: A normal food delivery turned into a story that touched people around the world. Richard Pulley, a 78 year old delivery driver from the United States, was just doing his job when something unexpected happened. He had gone to drop off a Starbucks order at a house. He had no idea that this small moment would soon change his life completely.

The moment was recorded by the house’s security camera. In the video Pulley can be seen slowly walking up the front steps while holding the delivery bag. He looked tired as he climbed the stairs. The person who ordered the food, Brittany Smith, later watched the recording after receiving her order.

When Smith saw the video she noticed how much effort the elderly man was putting into the job. She began wondering why someone at his age was still working in such a physically demanding role.

A Video that led to Huge Support

After watching the footage Smith decided to learn more about the delivery driver. She soon found out that Pulley had been working for DoorDash to help cover basic living costs. His retirement income and his wife’s income were not enough to pay for important things like rent and medicine.

Wanting to help him Smith created a fundraising campaign on GoFundMe. She named it “Give Richard a Chance to Rest Again.” Her first plan was simply to collect a small amount of money to support the couple.

But the story quickly spread on social media. People from many countries saw the video and felt touched by Pulley’s situation. Thousands of people began donating small amounts of money. Within only a few days the campaign collected more than $500,000.

Even Pulley was surprised by the huge support. In interviews he explained how the help would change his life. He said, “It’s taking a lot of pressure off and making life livable again,” he said.

The money will help pay medical bills that had built up over time. It will also help the couple secure their home and finally stop working. After years of struggling they can now retire without depending on physically difficult jobs.

Bigger Conversation

Richard Pulley’s story has also started discussions online about the financial struggles many older people face in the United States.

Even though Pulley worked for decades his retirement income was still not enough to manage the high cost of living. For the past year he and his wife Brenda had been working together to earn extra money. She drove the car while he walked up to houses to deliver the orders.

Their situation reflects the reality faced by many elderly people who are forced to keep working after retirement just to cover basic needs.

The fundraising campaign is still active and continues to receive donations from people around the world.
