West Bengal Assembly Elections 2026: The 2026 West Bengal Legislative Assembly election is one of the most closely watched political contests in India. The election will determine the government that will rule the eastern state for the next five years.

The upcoming election will produce major effects on both state and national political systems because both national and regional political parties are preparing to compete in an intense battle.

Last Date for Nominations: April 6, 2026

Scrutiny of Nominations: April 7, 2026

Last Date for Withdrawal: April 9, 2026

Polling Date: April 23, 2026

Counting of Votes: May 4, 2026

Completion of Election Process: May 6, 202

West Bengal Election 2026 Phase

The Election Commission of India has announced a two-phase polling schedule for the state.

  • Phase 1: 23 April 2026
  • Phase 2: 29 April 2026

Result Date

Vote Counting: 4 May 2026

Results for all 294 seats will be declared on the same day.

Total Seats in West Bengal Assembly

The West Bengal Legislative Assembly has 294 constituencies which divide into these three groups

  • General: 223
  • Scheduled Castes (SC): 68
  • Scheduled Tribes (ST): 16
  • Total: 294

To form the government, a party or alliance must win 148 seats.

Major Political Parties in the Election

The 2026 election will see multiple major political parties competing against each other.

1. All India Trinamool Congress (TMC)

Mamata Banerjee’s ruling party will use its 2021 election mandate to maintain political control of the state.

2. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)

The BJP has emerged as the main opposition in the state and is expected to mount a strong challenge.

3. Left Front and Congress Alliance

The Left parties along with the Congress will join forces to contest elections because they want to restore their previous political power.

The 2021 Election

The 2021 election process began with eight polling dates which continued for more than one month while violence events occurred throughout the period. The 2016 and 2011 Assembly elections followed a schedule that included six voting periods while the 2006 elections used five separate voting periods.

Number of Voters

70,459,284 voters (around 7.04 crore) eligible to vote in the election.

  • Male voters: 36,022,642
  • Female voters: 34,435,260
  • Third gender: 1,382

Total registered voters expected: over 7 crore

The Election Commission of India will deploy Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) and VVPAT systems across polling booths.
