September, in Old England, was called Haervest-monath (Harvest Month). This is the time to gather up the rest of the harvest and prepare for the winter months.
It is the ninth month of the year in the modern-day Gregorian calendar and its predecessor, the Julian calendar. The month kept its original name from the Roman calendar where it was the seventh month. Septem means “seven” in Latin.
Also known as the month of Autumn, the Anglo-Saxons called September Gerst Monath meaning barley month. This is because they would harvest their barley crops during this month. September is often associated with fire because it was the month of the Roman god Vulcan.
The month of September was named during a time when the calendar year began with March, which is why the name does not correspond with the placement in the Julian and Gregorian calendars.
