New Delhi: Veteran BJP leader and six-time MLA Mohan Singh Bisht has been elected as the Deputy Speaker of the Delhi Assembly, marking another significant development in the newly formed House. His appointment was confirmed on Thursday, following a motion proposed by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
The motion was seconded by Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, while Gajender Singh Yadav backed the second motion proposed by Anil Kumar Sharma.
A Veteran BJP Leader with Decades of Experience
Bisht, 67, secured a victory in the recent Delhi Assembly elections from the Mustafabad constituency, defeating AAP’s Adeel Ahmad Khan by a margin of over 17,000 votes. Previously, he represented the Karawal Nagar seat from 1998 to 2015 and won again in 2020.
His election as Deputy Speaker comes amid the maiden session of the eighth Delhi Assembly, which follows the BJP’s landslide victory in the February 5 elections. The BJP won 48 out of 70 seats, ending the AAP’s over-a-decade-long rule, while the AAP was reduced to 22 seats. The Congress failed to secure any seat in the polls.
With Mohan Singh Bisht in a key legislative position, the BJP-led Delhi government continues its formation process following its historic electoral win.
