Bengal Panchayat Results 2023: Monday marked the conclusion of voting for the three-tier panchayati raj system in West Bengal, after the State Election Commission announced revoting at 696 polling stations. After analysing reports of violence and tampering with ballot boxes and ballot papers, the decision to re-vote was made. The voting, which took place on Saturday in over 61,000 polling stations, began at 7 a.m. as scheduled, but was marred by violence, ballot box and paper tampering, and booth capture.

Violence during the Saturday elections resulted in the deaths of 18 people, including Trinamool Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party, and Congress workers, amid allegations of booth capturing and vote manipulation throughout the state.

Candidates alleged they were harassed and accosted on their way to file nominations as the TMC, the BJP, and the Congress traded accusations.

Since the polls were announced on June 8, there has been widespread violence throughout the state, resulting in the fatalities of more than a dozen people.

In West Bengal, after a month of violence and court interventions, the rural body elections are viewed as a litmus test for the TMC ahead of the Lok Sabha election in 2024. The elections occur at a time when the state’s governing party, led by Mamata Banerjee, is facing multiple corruption charges and a number of its leaders have been arrested by the CBI and ED.
