A North Kolkata Puja committee has announced a menstrual hygiene theme: Pathurighata Pancher Pally, a North Kolkata Durga Puja committee, proclaimed reproductive hygiene as the theme for this year’s Durga puja pandal. The banner for the puja committee was unveiled on International Menstrual Hygiene Day 2023, the 84th anniversary of its founding, where the theme for this year, “Ritumati,” was also announced.
Ellora Saha, the secretary of the puja committee, commented on the need to take menstrual hygiene seriously, stating, “There is no better way to get rid of a problem than to address it, and it is about time that we stopped viewing menstruation as a taboo. There is an urgent need to raise awareness about menstrual hygiene, and we’ll commemorate this day by distributing sanitary napkins to women.”
She continued, “Menstruation is a natural biological process that does not require secrecy; however, menstrual hygiene is being compromised because people don’t want to talk about periods; even when purchasing sanitary pads, many people still prefer writing their names on paper and asking for it; we must unlearn these practises.” Siddharth Ray, also known as Sidhu, will compose the Durga Puja Pandal’s theme music. In addition to being a singer, he possesses an MBBS degree.
