Veteran Congress leader Dhani Ram Shandil has retained his Solan seat in Himachal Pradesh, defeating his nearest BJP rival and son-in-law Rajesh Kashyap on Thursday.

Shandil defeated Kashyap by a margin of 3,858 votes.

Shandil, a retired army colonel who is eighty-two years old and currently the oldest candidate in the race. There were four people running for election in the Solan constituency, one of whom represented the Aam Aadmi Party. The counting of votes for the 68-person assembly started at 8 in the morning, and the incumbent BJP party is hoping to keep their majority. Shandil narrowly defeated Kashyap in the assembly elections of 2017, eking out a victory by a margin of only 671 votes over his opponent. At the time of the election, Kashyap was contesting the seat for the first time from the Solan constituency.
