The annual Dreams of Reason Feast Day is observed on April 14. It is a day set aside to commemorate discredited scientific theories and science fiction futures that have not yet come to pass. Several theories have been discarded and others have been debunked, but a significant number of these theories paved the way for the investigation of contemporary theories. Even though science fiction is widely read, its predicted future has not always come true. Therefore, we anticipate Visions of Reason Feast Day, where we will examine science fiction futures and debunked scientific theories.
HISTORY OF DREAMS OF REASON FEAST DAY
Dreams of Reason Feast Day’s origins are largely unknown, and no one is certain who began it or why. A scientific theory is a well-supported description of a portion of the natural world that is based on a compilation of facts repeatedly confirmed by observation and experimentation in the laboratory. Darwin studied modern methods in order to gain insight into a controversial instrument in the scientific environment in which he grew up: the hypothesis. As a consequence of reading the works of John Herschel and William Whewell, Darwin transformed nature itself into a scientist. With its theories and experiments, scientific practise discovered a parallel in the diversity and selection of the natural world. Darwin’s accidental naturalisation of a methodological vocabulary opened the door for the application of evolutionary theory to the study of the human mind and, ultimately, to the philosophy of science, completing the circle.
