Dussehra or Vijayadashami is a Hindu festival celebrated after nine days of Navratri. The day celebrates the victory of good or evil. Dussehra also marks the end of Durga Puja celebrations and this year it will be celebrated on October 8.

The element of the festival remains the same but the day is known by different names by various parts of the country. In the northern and southern states, Dussehra stands for the victory of Lord Ram over Ravana and the eastern and northeastern states mark the victory of Goddess Durga over Mahishasura.

In the southern states, the festival is also known as Vijayadashami.

Celebration of Dussehra

In north India, Ramleela is held which is the re-enacting of the Lord Rama’s story. On Dussehra, people also burn Effigies of Ravana and his brother Meghanada and Kumbakaran. While in the eastern region, people take the idol of Goddess Durga for immersion in water.

After 20 days of Dussehra, Diwali, the festival of lights is celebrated.
