Jharkhand Lok Sabha Polls 2024

Jharkhand Lok Sabha Polls 2024: After announcing the schedule on March 16, the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced that the 18th Lok Sabha elections would take place in seven phases from April 19 to June 1.

During the latter half of the electoral cycle, all eyes will be on the eastern state of Jharkhand.

What is the number of constituencies in Jharkhand?

There are fourteen parliamentary constituencies in Jharkhand, and six seats are reserved for SC and ST candidates. Notable constituencies include Hazaribag, Khunti, Dumka, Singbhum, Ranchi, and Jamshedpur.

Further, Jharkhand has one of the nation’s largest rural populations, with only 24 percent of its population living in urban areas (2011 census).

What is the date of the Jharkhand election?

Like the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the state will see voting across four phases: May 13, May 20, May 25, and June 1.

What are the key issues in Jharkhand?

The BJP’s campaign will also focus on unemployment, poverty, and inadequate infrastructure development in Jharkhand.

Who are key contenders in Jharkhand?

Despite being hailed as potentially the wealthiest states in 2000 post-Bihar bifurcation due to its abundance of natural resources, Jharkhand has been plagued by political turbulence ever since. As of the 2019 Assembly elections, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), Congress, and RJD coalition is in power.

However, the BJP-led NDA alliance has maintained dominance since the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, winning 12 seats in 2014, and 14 seats in 2019.

In Jharkhand, political upheaval occurred just before the Lok Sabha elections this year when JMM chief Hemant Soren was arrested over alleged money laundering charges.

In a recent development, JMM MLA Sita Soren, daughter-in-law of JMM president Shibu Soren, defected to the BJP, citing isolation within her husband’s party. Champai Soren became the new Chief Minister of the state.

The high-stakes political drama has injected fervor into the state’s political landscape, setting the stage for an interesting showdown between the JMM and the BJP.
