National Babysitter’s Day 2023: Date, History, Significance and Facts

National Babysitter’s Day 2023: National Babysitter’s Day is celebrated annually on the Saturday before Mother’s Day to honour the individuals who provide the essential service of caring for our children. Babysitters, nannies, and au pairs have been in business since the 19th century, when it was hypothesised that the term “sit” in this context originated from hens “sitting” on eggs to protect them. In 2003, the Safety Whys Babysitter Training Company created this day to honour the individuals who care for our children when we cannot.

HISTORY OF NATIONAL BABYSITTER’S DAY

As a parent, your top priority is ensuring the welfare of your children. We leave our children in the care of babysitters so that we can focus on our jobs or take a vacation without worrying about our children.

Our babysitters play a vital role by providing dependable services when caring for our children; consequently, we do not make this decision carelessly. The position of carer is typically filled by a family member, an agency, or a referral. In either case, the person should ideally be trained in first aid, including CPR and emergency management, in addition to meeting the state-mandated minimum age for childcare.

Wet nurses were the first babysitters outsourced in the 1800s. Wet nurses were carers hired by affluent families to care for children, which often included breastfeeding. In colonial societies, nannies spent their entire careers caring for and rearing their masters’ children from generation to generation.

The term babysitter was coined in 1937, following the immense prevalence of the position. It originated in the 1920s as a means to teach teenagers responsibility, gaining prominence in 1950s and 1960s suburban America. Nowadays, babysitters are expected to have completed the appropriate training. This day, Safety Whys, was created by one of the organisations that accredit personnel in the field.

Youth Babysitter Training Programme. It was founded in Helotes, Texas, in 1989. It seeks to establish quality standards for youth caring for younger children by addressing a variety of safety-related topics using a variety of teaching methods, including role-playing. National Babysitter’s Day was established in June 2002, and it was first celebrated on May 10, 2003.

WHY WE LOVE NATIONAL BABYSITTER’S DAY

We value our time alone.

If you’ve ever had time to yourself because you could rely on a carer, today is the day to express your gratitude. Babysitters give us a respite from our hectic schedules and children so that we can enjoy dinner, a night out, or some peace and quiet.

We appreciate your consideration

Frequently, the demands of work leave us with little or no energy to interact meaningfully with our children. Babysitters provide our children with the necessary attention when we cannot.

We recognise the effort

It requires considerable effort to raise a child and meet their requirements. 24/7, and sometimes carers need assistance. Babysitters assist with assignments and provide playtime for younger children.
