National Crayon Day 2024: The 31st of March is National Crayon Day, commemorating one of the most popular objects in America: the crayon! Not only do crayons have brilliant colors, but they also have a distinct scent, a pleasant feel in the hands, and for some children, a waxy taste. Daily production of over 12 million crayons ensures that one is never out of reach. Therefore, take your box of 64 crayons, complete with a sharpener, and prepare for artistic expression and nostalgia.

HISTORY OF NATIONAL CRAYON DAY

The crayon has a colourful past. Although coloured wax moulds have existed for centuries, the modern crayon was not invented until the 1900s.

Binney & Smith introduced Crayola crayons in 1903 as a safer and more affordable alternative to the art supplies of the time. Binney & Smith’s renowned eight-pack of crayons debuted with the following colour palette: Black, Brown, Orange, Violet, Blue, Green, and Yellow. This colour combination and their names have remained unaltered for the past 45 years.

Since then, numerous colours have been added, colour names and packaging have changed, and new colour designs, including neon, metallic, and glitter, have emerged. Several hues have been removed from the colour wheel, typically on March 31.

Americans and Americana hold a special spot in their hearts for the Crayola crayon. In November 1999, it was one of the first toys to be inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame. On their 10th birthday, the average American will have used 730 crayons, according to estimates. Mr. Fred Rogers contributed to the annals of crayons by moulding the official 100 billionth crayon at the Crayola plant in Easton in February 1996.

In addition to adding colour to our lives, crayons have been used as a metaphor for the diversity of the human species and our ability to coexist in a diverse world. The American author Robert Fulghum once said, “We could learn a lot from crayons; some are sharp, some are pretty, some are dull while others are bright, some have strange names, but they’ve all learned to coexist in the same box.”

NATIONAL CRAYON DAY ACTIVITIES

Order a customised crayon case

Crayola offers crayon boxes that can be personalised; you can choose the box’s graphics, name personalization, and crayon colours. It is an excellent gift concept for the child or adult who already has everything!

Explore the Crayola Experience.

If you are willing to take a road journey, you can visit one of the five Crayola Experience locations in Orlando, Florida; Chandler, Arizona; Plano, Texas; Minneapolis, Minnesota; or Easton, Pennsylvania, where you can create a masterpiece, make crayon molds, and name and wrap your own crayon.

Construct a crayon candle

Due to the fact that crayons can be melted, you can create a colourful candle with a few old crayons, small paper cups, candle wicks, wax flakes, popsicle sticks, and candle moulds. Microwave wax shavings in a paper cup with a small piece of crayon for 45 seconds. Using a popsicle stick, stir the melted wax before pouring it into a candle mould with the flame in the centre. If you wish to apply additional layers, you must wait 30 minutes between coats.

Five Interesting Crayola Crayon Facts

Inexpensive past-time

The first box of eight Crayola crayons sold for 5 cents; today, a classic 8-count box can be purchased for as little as 99 cents, which is still a fantastic deal!

Strong aroma

In a US smell test, crayons were ranked as the eighteenth most recognisable odour out of eighty items; the crayon’s scent and waxy texture are derived from beef fat.

Seven gradations of blue

In 2001, Americans voted blue as their favourite crayon hue, with six additional shades of blue rounding out the top 10.

Leftovers

The remnants of used pastels are known as “leftolas.”

Billions generated

Since Crayola began manufacturing pastels in 1903, over 230 billion have been sold, with 2019 production expected to surpass 3 billion.
