National Sea Monkey Day 2023: Date, History, Significance and Facts

National Sea Monkey Day 2023: National Sea Monkey Day is observed annually on May 16 to honour these small organisms. Since their creation in a laboratory many years ago, Sea Monkeys have become a common household companion. Many of us have fond recollections of waiting for our first Sea Monkeys to arrive in the mail. They are extremely well-liked among children and adults equally, and at one point, comic books played a significant role in their marketing.

HISTORY OF NATIONAL SEA MONKEY DAY

In 1957, while visiting a pet store, Harold von Braunhut became intrigued with a species of brine shrimp sold as pet food called Artemia salina. Dr. Anthony D’Agostino, a marine biologist, collaborated with him to bring the sea primate to life. Together, they devised a dry mixture of nutrients and chemicals that can be added to plain water to create a growth-friendly environment for prawns.

Initially sold under the name ‘Instant Life,’ Sea Monkeys were subsequently renamed ‘Sea Monkeys’ due to their monkey-tail-like shape, which makes them resemble monkeys of the sea rather than shrimp. From the 1960s onward, they were a very popular companion, and they typically came with a special mini aquarium for hatching and raising the fish.

Over the years, these small creatures have acquired widespread popularity and even a name in popular culture. They have appeared on television programmes such as “South Park,” “The Simpsons,” and “Desperate Housewives.”
