A sixteen-day festival known as pitru paksha is when Hindus honour and venerate their ancestors. This period, which starts with the first full moon (full moon) after Ganesh Chaturthi and ends on the new moon, allows people to honour those who have influenced our moral and intellectual development as well as those who are not directly related to them biologically. The Neco ancestors should be honoured at the patriarchal side since there is no better method to express gratitude.

The background to Pitru Paksha

Legend has it that when King Karna, a warrior, passed away in the Mahabharata conflict and his soul rose to heaven, he was given gold ornaments rather than sustenance.

He asked Swami Indra of Heaven why he is not getting real food because he felt unable to sustain himself on these things. They were then informed by Lord Indra that although they had given these items as charity their entire lives, they had never given their ancestors sustenance. Karna responded by saying he was unaware of her ancestors. After hearing this, Indra consented to send Karna down to Earth for fifteen days so that he might prepare food in honour of her ancestors and give. The Pitru paksha is the modern name for this time frame.

2023 Pitru Paksha – Shradh Customs and Holidays

Ritualistic Shradh is carried out during this period. Although the details of this ceremony may differ from person to person, it often combines three elements. Pindadan, Pinda’s offering to the ancestors, is the first section. Rice balls known as pinda are often produced with goat’s milk, ghee, sugar, rice, honey, and on occasion barley. Burnt water is offered as part of the ceremony’s second phase together with kusha grass, barley, flour, and black sesame. The Brahmin is fed as the ceremony comes to a close.

The priests are receiving food from this Brahmin. Reading from the sacred Sashtra is considered lucky during this time as well.

Certain activities should be avoided during Pitru Paksha, though. Participants are advised to refrain from joining any fresh initiatives; Eat non-vegetarian meals; get a haircut or shave; or consume junk food or foods high in onions or garlic.

Which day are the ancestors’ Shradh ceremonies performed?

However, Shradha can be performed for ancestors’ peace on the new moon of each month, but doing Shradha in the Pitru paksha is said to be particularly significant. For the day, on Pitru Paksha, the scientific theory is to recite the ancestors. The father or the deceased family member should be remembered, along with the date of the family’s departure, and should only pray on the said date if it falls in the paternal home. Ashwin Amavasya, also known as Sarvapatriya Amavasya, can be performed on Shradha if the birthdate is unknown. Prior to time, i.e., those who have passed away as a result of an accident, suicide, etc., their religion is performed on Chaturdashi.

For the mother, Ashtami is the appropriate day to rejoice, whereas Navami is the day for the father.
