Punjab: Gang of liquor smugglers busted in Moga

Liquor bottles in India to carry health warnings, April 1 onwards

The local police along with the Excise and Taxation Department has busted a gang of liquor smugglers and recovered around 140 boxes (1,680 bottles) of various brands smuggled from Chandigarh and Haryana for illegal sale in Moga, the police said on Saturday.

Local liquor traders got information that an illegal consignment coming to the district and following that, traders alerted Excise officials and police. A Swift car was intercepted on the National Highway near Ajitwal. Around 23 boxes of liquor were seized and the driver, Manpreet Singh alias Mani, a resident of Bhinder Khurd village, was detained. His aide named Manpreet Singh, managed to flee.

During interrogation, Mani told that he had brought the consignment from Chandigarh for illegal sale in Moga.  A case was registered under the Excise Act at Ajitwal police station.
