Are you aware that 175 years have passed since the birth of the sage Ramakrishna? Jayanti, which translates to “birth anniversary,” is the occasion on which the great sage Ramakrishna was born.

Several decades following his demise, followers continued to congregate at the Ramakrishna Math, a philanthropic organization established by Swami Vivekananda, a disciple of Ramakrishna, to make supplications and monetary contributions.

The History of Ramakrishna Jayanti

Born in the village of Kamarpukur, West Bengal, India, in 1836 to Khudiram Chattopadhyay and Chandramani Devi, Ramakrishna was an Indian national. There is a belief that premonitions and spiritual experiences had by Ramakrishna’s parents indicated that God would manifest as their son upon Earth. Ramakrishna enrolled in school but quickly withdrew because he believed the educational method to be improper. He held the belief that the education system was designed with the sole purpose of instructing students in money-making and survival skills, with little regard for spirituality or life’s essentials.

Ramakrishna underwent several meditative episodes during his youth. His initial encounter was when the sight of cranes amidst a dense canopy of thunderclouds illuminated a dark blue sky, captivating him.

In 1855, the wealthy aristocrat Rani Rashmoni established the Dakshineswar Kali Temple and appointed Ramkrishna as its leading minister. Years later, Ramakrishna amassed an enormous following. An eminent disciple of his was William Hastie, an instructor at the College of the Scottish Church. Hastie inspired a few students, including Narendranath Dutta, to visit Ramakrishna. Dutta was captivated upon encountering Ramakrishna’s math, despite his initial skepticism. Shortly thereafter, Dutta converted to Ramakrishna and acquired the appellation Swami Vivekananda.

In 1886, Ramkrishna ceased to exist, having been diagnosed with pharynx cancer in 1885. A congregation of devotees, under the leadership of Vivekananda, gathered in Baranagar, near the Ganges river. As a result of this Ramakrishna Math initiation, March 15 was designated as Ramakrishna Jayanti.
