Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo 2024 (US): The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was the agreement that the United States of America and Mexico ratified on February 2, 1848. By doing so, Mexico relinquished its claim to Texas and agreed that its territory would terminate at the Rio Grande, which would subsequently serve as its border. In addition, the agreement stipulated that the Mexican government would relinquish New Mexico in exchange for $15 million. This determination influenced that nation by diminishing Mexico’s overall magnitude to nearly half of its original magnitude.

Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo History

A dispute arose between the United States and Mexico regarding the territory that Texas encompassed during the Mexican-American War. This occurred after both the United States and Mexico desired to annex the Texan state. The dispute arose in 1845 when Mexico asserted that the Nueces River marked the end of Texas and the United States asserted that it terminated at the Rio Grande. During the subsequent two years, combat continued in New Mexico, Chihuahua, and California, while General Stephen Kearny and his forces advanced towards Monterrey. In August 1847, General Winfield Scott and his army executed a pivotal maneuver by seizing Mexico City.

Nicholas Trist, the United States representative, and Mexican officials initiated peace treaty negotiations in August 1847. The Treaty was signed in Guadalupe Hidalgo on February 2, 1848, in an area from which the Mexican leaders had earlier retreated in advance of the American forces.

America achieved victory through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, acquiring 525,000 square miles of territory in Mexico extending from the Rio Grande to the Pacific Ocean. Present-day designations for the territories acquired by the Treaty of Wyoming, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, and New Mexico; and California, Utah, and Wyoming constitute the southern American boundaries. Mexicans lived there, and 90% of them decided to become citizens of the United States within a year of arriving.
