In a shocking incident involving superstition, a five-month-old baby girl was bitten by snake bite. The incident happened at Rajnandgaon in Chhattisgarh when, a couple handed over the baby to a snake charmer with an intention to give blessings of ‘Naag Devta’ to the child.

The snake charmer had allegedly told the couple that the snake wasn’t poisonous and continued performing the rituals for about two hours, even as her pulse rate kept getting fainter. By the time she could be taken to the hospital, it was too late.

It was reported that he had shown up at their door and asked them to let their baby get the blessings of the serpentine god. After having gained their consent, he went on to put the snake around the infant’s neck following which the snake bit her.

The neighbours caught the snake charmer and handed him over to police. The snake charmer has been identified as Billu Ram Markam.

In a similar incident, last week, two men hacked their sister-in-law to death in Bihar’s Sitamarhi as a sacrifice to please the gods, on the advice of a tantrik. He had told them that the woman was a ‘daayan’ or a witch as she was unable to conceive a baby since past many years.
