Alcohol kills coronavirus, claims Rajasthan Congress MLA, urges CM Gehlot to open wine shops

At a time when the entire world is desperately searching for a coronavirus vaccine, a Congress MLA has offered a rather bizarre solution to the pandemic – that has claimed thousands of lives across the globe. Senior Congress leader and Rajasthan legislator Bharat Singh Kundanpur has claimed that “drinking alcohol will surely remove coronavirus from the throat.”

The Congress lawmaker from Sangod has written a letter to Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot urging him to reopen liquor stores in the state. All alcohol shops across the country have been closed in the wake of nationwide lockdown to control the outbreak of deadly coronavirus.

“When coronavirus can be removed by washing hands with alcohol, then drinking alcohol will surely remove virus from the throat,” Kundanpur contended in his letter dated April 30.

MLA alleged sale of illegal liquor is rampant

He also alleged the black marketing of alcohol is rampant in the state while the liquor shops remain closed due to the coronavirus-induced lockdown. The MLA said that this will have a massive impact on the economy.

He even mentioned the incident of Halena village in Bharatpur where a person died and two lost their eyesight after consuming country-made liquor.

The Congress leader also opposed the state government’s decision to increase excise duty on alcohol to generate more revenue amid revenue loss due to nationwide lockdown.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had on March 24 announced nationwide lockdown till April 14 to contain the spread of COVID-19. However, the lockdown was later extended till May 3.

The death toll due to CVOID-19 has crossed the figure of 1,000 and the number of cases has climbed to above 35,000. But the good news is that the doubling rate of coronavirus cases has improved to 11 days in the country against the 3.4 days before the lockdown was imposed.
