9 senior RSS members at Nagpur headquarters hospitalised after contracting COVID-19

An 80-year-old woman, who tested positive for Covid-19, was abandoned by her son at the bus station at Macherla town in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh on Thursday.

However, the incident came to light on Friday after the police registered a case against the man.

According to Macherla police, the elderly woman had returned from her daughter’s residence in Goa to Macherla to claim her monthly pension and to see her son. After she showed symptoms of Covid-19, her son, Venkateswara Rao, took her to a hospital where her test result turned out to be positive.

Trouble began for the aged woman after she tested positive as her son abandoned her.

Macherla police inspector Rajeswara Rao told TOI that Venkateswara Rao took her ailing mother to Macharla bus station and asked her to sit on a bench stating that he would buy water and return soon. He, however, left the place and did not return.

When passengers at the bus station noticed the elderly woman, they enquired her details and informed the local police. Health officials visited the bus station and shifted the woman to Covid-19 isolation ward in Guntur for treatment.

Police said that they spoke to Venkateswara Rao, who happens to be physically challenged. He told the police that he had abandoned his mother as he was scared that other members of his family would also be affected.

Police told the media portal that they had called the accused for counselling.
