Giving Tuesday 2023: Each year, on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, individuals engage in community service to begin the holiday season. Volunteering or making a monetary contribution to a charitable cause, Giving Tuesday is a day designed to benefit the community. Consult with our gift guide if you wish to participate by purchasing a present for someone while simultaneously contributing to charity.

The Origins of Giving Tuesday

The 92nd Street Y of New York established Giving Tuesday in 2012 in collaboration with the United Nations Foundation. Giving Tuesday was initially declared a holiday in September 2012, which was two months prior to its inaugural observance on November 27. The declaration was published on the technology-focused website Mashable. Day of the Day exists to motivate individuals and organizations to engage in proactive measures, analogous to how Black Friday and Cyber Monday established a structure for retailers to market their products.

Briefly before and after November 27, 2012, “The Washington Post,” the official blog of the White House, ABC News, and “Huffington Post” all covered Giving Tuesday. In addition, Forbes published a guide on effective giving during the event.

Mashable and Google+ collaborated in 2013 to organize a “hangout-a-thon” in observance of Giving Tuesday. Charity Navigator and “The Chronicle of Philanthropy” were among the philanthropy information websites that provided coverage of the holiday. The article “The Chronicle of Philanthropy” highlighted a contribution from Good Ventures to GiveDirectly, Google’s hangout-a-thon, and Case Foundation-announced matching grants. The value of charitable contributions on Giving Tuesday increased by around two-thirds between 2012 and 2013, with more than 7,000 nonprofit organizations participating.

For the 2018 holiday occurrence, Facebook and PayPal announced that they would, on a first-come, first-served basis, match up to $7 million in donations to nonprofit organizations in the United States. On Giving Tuesday, a record-breaking $125 million was raised on Facebook, surpassing all previous daily donations on the platform.
