Disney was operating solely with two devoted animators, Ub Iwerks and Les Clark, and had to begin from the very beginning. This experience taught him the importance of retaining complete ownership of all rights to characters that his company created. Mickey was inspired by a domesticated mouse that resided on his workstation at the Laugh-O-Gram Studio, situated in Kansas City, Missouri. Prior to the creation of Mickey Mouse, the character was originally known as Mortimer Mouse. However, his wife, Lillian, persuaded him to alter the name.
During a test screening of the animated film “Plane Crazy” on May 14, 1928, Mickey did not manage to captivate viewers or attract distributors. Walt subsequently produced “The Gallopin’ Gaucho,” a second Mickey short, which also failed to attract distributor interest. The 18 November 1928 New York premiere of “Steamboat Willy” was co-directed by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks. With the intention of parodying Buster Keaton’s “Steamboat Bill, Jr.”, this film marked Mickey’s début and became the third to be produced, as well as the first to secure a distributor.
