National Adoption Day 2023 Activities, Dates, History, FAQs, and Facts About Foster Care

National Adoption Day 2023: National Adoption Day occurs annually on November 18. It is noteworthy to mention that 4,000 adoptions were finalized on the Saturday preceding Thanksgiving in 2015. This day is observed with activities taking place across the nation, and it is an occasion when courts and communities collaborate in an effort to place children in the foster care system with loving families. On this National Adoption Day, thousands of foster children are being adopted into permanent homes.

The History of National Adoption Day

National Adoption Day is an initiative to draw attention to the over 125,000 children in U.S. foster care who are awaiting adoption. National Adoption Day was established by a coalition of national stakeholders, including the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption, Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute, Alliance for Children’s Rights, and Children’s Action Network.

In 2000, seven cities were encouraged by the coalition and the Freddie Mac Foundation to open their courts on or around the Saturday preceding Thanksgiving in order to finalize and celebrate foster care adoptions.

Michael Nash, a former presiding judge of the Juvenile Court of Los Angeles County, established the inaugural National Adoption Day through his pioneering initiatives. By facilitating court operations on Saturdays, enlisting the assistance of court personnel volunteers, and finalizing adoptions, Nash effectively mitigated the backlog of one of the most hectic courts in the country.

Presently, stakeholders including policymakers, practitioners, and advocates work in concert to organize these yearly, all-day events across 400 cities in the United States. As of this moment, 75,000 foster children’s aspirations have been realized through National Adoption Day activities.

Adoptions account for approximately 2 million Americans annually, with approximately 150,000 occurring in private settings and an additional 50,000 in foster care. Adoptions from the United States can be either domestic or foreign. Adoptions within the home can be coordinated independently, through an adoption agency, or on behalf of the state.
