National Dog Mom’s Day 2023: National Dog Mom’s Day, observed on the second Saturday of May and occurring on May 13 this year, is a day for all dog-loving women in the United States to commemorate their unique form of motherhood. The domestication of canines occurred between 20,000 and 40,000 years ago. Dogs are descendants of a variety of extinct wolf. Over the years, they have lost their wild temperament and turned into the best and most loyal of man’s companions. They have even wormed their way into our affections, forming strong bonds with us and becoming members of our family. There are more than 350 distinct dog varieties in the world, each with its own unique characteristics and abilities. It is always preferable to learn a dog’s characteristics before adopting it to ensure an ideal match.

HISTORY OF NATIONAL DOG MOM’S DAY

Dogs’ progenitors began living alongside our hunter-gatherer ancestors between 20,000 and 40,000 years ago. That was prior to the domestication of vegetation, goats, cattle, and other animals by humans. Scientists assert that canines are descended from the same species of wolves as the ancient grey wolves of Eurasia. Many hypotheses exist regarding how these wild wolves became domesticated and evolved into breeds such as Chihuahuas, Spaniels, and Poodles. But what we do know is that somehow, these wolves and our hunter-gatherer ancestors established a symbiotic relationship that resulted in immense benefits for both parties.

Following the nomadic lifestyle of their masters, dogs quickly spread throughout the globe. According to the theory of multiple domestication, while untamed wolves were being domesticated in East Eurasia, an independent group of wolves domesticated in the West. Approximately 5,000 years ago, some humans from the East migrated to the West, carrying their dogs with them. These canines from the East outbreed their Western counterparts and become the dominant breed. This explains why only 10% of modern canines share DNA with these extinct ancient Western dogs.

As humans began to settle and cultivate the land, they began breeding dogs to suit their requirements. This was more prevalent during the Victorian era. There are now tracking dogs, firefighting dogs, search and rescue canines, military dogs, guide dogs, and companion dogs, among others.

Dig, a dating app for dog lovers, created National Dog Mom’s Day in 2018 to thank dog moms, foster dog moms, and future dog moms for all the affection they give to dogs.
