National Safe Motherhood Day 2023: In memory of Kasturba Gandhi, the political advocate of India

National Safe Motherhood Day 2023: The American Society for Reproductive Medicine proclaims April 11 as Safe Motherhood Day annually. National Safe Motherhood Day was created by the White Ribbon Alliance India to ensure that pregnant women, new mothers, and their families have access to appropriate prenatal, delivery, and postnatal care. India’s elevated maternal mortality rate is responsible for more than a dozen percent of all maternal deaths worldwide.

In most instances, maternal deaths are preventable. If women have access to healthcare, they will be able to prevent or resolve problems before they occur. Women who are pregnant and those who have recently given birth should be aware of the need for medical care. Parenthood is both a blessing and a challenge. As a woman embarks on this path, she must at all times feel protected and at ease. Throughout this pandemic of the Corona virus, motherhood has been a difficult yet rewarding experience for a number of women.

History of National Safe Motherhood Day:

This day was organised by WRAI to raise awareness among Indian women about good healthcare practises and the availability of various healthcare programmes for expectant and new mothers, as well as those who have recently given birth and those in the postpartum period.

The Indian government designated Kasturba Gandhi’s birthday, April 11, as National Safe Motherhood Day in 2003 in response to a proposal by WRAI. She was married to the national icon Mahatma Gandhi. Each year, WRAI chooses the topic for National Safe Motherhood Day.

National Safe Motherhood Day Importance:

To assure the safety and health of all women during pregnancy and childbirth, “safe motherhood” must be provided. India is responsible for 15% of all maternal deaths worldwide. In India, pregnancy-related deaths murder 44,000 women annually. Despite the fact that more than 80 percent of women give birth in health care facilities, the mortality rate remains high. Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, a Public Health Emergency of International Concern has been declared.

All expectant mothers should have access to high-quality care, regardless of whether they are infected with COVID-19. This includes prenatal, neonatal, postpartum, perinatal period, and psychiatric treatment. COVID-19 poses a grave threat to the most vulnerable individuals in our lives, but we can all take basic precautions to defend them. The wisest course of action at this time is to remain at home. Pregnant women should avoid walking outside unless they have an urgent medical need.

Theme for National Safe Motherhood Day in 2023:

The theme of this year’s Safe Motherhood Day events is “Remain at home during corona virus outbreaks and protect mother and infant from corona virus.” The members of WRAI select a new topic each year in an effort to disseminate awareness and coordinate large-scale campaigns across India. These efforts seek to ensure that every pregnant woman has the right to live and can do so without endangering her or her unborn child’s lives.
