Orthodox Pentecost Monday 2023: Pentecost Monday, sometimes called White Monday, will be celebrated on June 5 this year. It is traditionally held seven weeks following Easter. In many countries, people take the day off work to attend church services and sing hymns in honour of the Holy Spirit on this Orthodox feast day. Especially in regions where the number of Orthodox Christians is expanding, such North America, the Eastern Mediterranean, and the Middle East, this holiday is gaining popularity.

Orthodox Pentecost Monday 2023: History

Pentecost Monday, or White Monday as it is known in the Orthodox Church, is one of the most important Christian holidays. Pentecost is one of the two most significant feasts in Orthodox Christianity, along with Easter. About 50 days following Easter, a festival honouring the Holy Spirit is held. Orthodox Christians hold the view that their patriarchs and bishops are direct ancestors of Christ’s Apostles and, as such, that they are the traditional followers of Jesus.

This Church asserts that it follows Christ’s teachings in their entirety since He established it. Mostly practised in Eastern and Southeastern Europe, its 220 million adherents make it the world’s second-largest religion. Christ’s promise to send the Holy Spirit to help his disciples come true, the Orthodox Pentecost is a prominent Christian tradition that celebrates the Holy Spirit’s descent to Earth on God’s orders.

Orthodox Christians observe this day with a massive feast at which families get together, remember the good moments they’ve had, and toast to the future. The feast is preceded with a sermon in church, which is followed by the singing of traditional hymns in praise of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost is a day when Christians from all around the world gather to celebrate the arrival of the Holy Spirit, proving that Jesus’ words were fulfilled.
