What is ONDC? Zomato and Swiggy have a monopoly on online supper delivery services in India. Although these platforms deliver food from restaurants swiftly, they are criticised for adding a “middleman cut” that increases prices.
The Open Network for Digital Commerce, or ONDC, seeks to alter this by removing intermediaries between customers and businesses. Currently, the service is accessible in a limited number of locations, including Bengaluru. It is believed that ONDC simultaneously benefits both consumers and businesses, albeit at the cost of sharing your personal information.
WHAT IS ONDC?
It is an open technology network constructed on an open protocol that enables any network-enabled application to identify and interact with local commerce in categories such as mobility, shopping, meal ordering and delivery, and hotel booking.
The platform enables online communication and business transactions between consumers and merchants, regardless of the other applications customers employ. It is not necessary for buyers and vendors to utilise the same platform or mobile application in order to complete a transaction. They can use multiple programmes and still conduct business.
According to the commerce ministry, the foundations of ONDC are to be open protocols for all facets of the entire chain of activities in the exchange of commodities and services, much like HTTP for information exchange over the internet, SMPTE for the exchange of emails, and UPI for payments.
