A pregnant migrant labourer who was walking from Delhi to her village in Supaul district of Bihar gave birth on the way. The 28-year-old woman covered 900km from Noida on foot and in the back of a truck to reach Gopalganj on the UP-Bihar border.

The woman, Rekha Devi started walking with her husband and children. Sandeep Yadav who hails from Balhan village in Supaul district was a vegetable vendor in Delhi, but because of the nationwide lockdown owing to the rising coronavirus pandemic, he decided to return home.

As soon as Rekha collapsed, Sandeep started seeking help. An ambulance arrived after some time to take Rekha to the Gopalganj Sadar Hospital, where she gave birth to a girl. The baby, named Shristi, was on a ventilator till late on Friday.

None of the hospital staff attended to the woman because of the fear of coronavirus, and it was only after the district magistrate’s order that she was finally attended by the hospital staff. Meanwhile, the girl child has been named Shrishti by the family, but now the family’s main concern is how do they reach home because they still have miles to go.

Gopalganj SP Manoj Kumar Tiwari said, “We will arrange a vehicle to send the family to Supaul once doctors declare the woman and her baby fit for travel.”
