Assam: North Lakhimpur College professor arrested for ‘sexually harassing’ 58 female students

A college professor has been detained in North Lakhimpur, Assam, on allegations of sexually harassing 58 female students of Semester III in the Assamese department.

The police apprehended Hemanta Kumar Sarma, an assistant professor at North Lakhimpur College (Autonomous), after receiving complaints from college officials.

The allegations also include his alleged propensity for entering classes while intoxicated.

According to BC Chetia, the college’s principal, 58 female Assamese department students filed a written complaint alleging that Sarma inappropriately touched them inside the classroom while intoxicated.

Some of the afflicted students had to withdraw out of college due to the assistant professor’s sexual harassment, according to the complaint.

Principal Chetia added that a meeting of the college’s internal discipline committee and Anti-Sexual Harassment at the Workplace Cell was convened after receiving the complaint, and it was decided to forward the complaint to the police.

Hemanta Kumar Sarma, on the other hand, denied all charges brought against him.

After his detention at the North Lakhimpur Sadar Police Station, Sarma told the media that he was the victim of a conspiracy and that the truth would prevail at the appropriate time.
