Congress Launches `Narmada Seva Sena’ in MP To Conserve Narmada

Narmada Seva Sena: The opposition Congress launched a campaign to protect the Narmada River, which is regarded as the state’s lifeblood, with just one month to vote for the state legislature. The party wants to highlight the vital role that the sacred Narmada River plays in supporting the livelihoods of millions of people in southern Madhya Pradesh as well as increase awareness of how important it is to protect this region’s lifeline.

Through this campaign, they seek to gain support from the general public and highlight the importance of taking sustainable action to safeguard this priceless natural resource. In response to rising pollution and to challenge the current administration’s stance on the issue, former chief minister and current president of the Madhya Pradesh Congress Kamal Nath established the “Narmada Seva Sena,” a non-partisan group led by a top party official and state Congress spokesperson Bhupendra Gupta.

On Monday night, Gupta-led members of the Sena performed “Kshama Aarti” on the shore of Rajghat (a body of water in the Narmada backwaters). Gupta said that more than four crore people lived along the Narmada River from its source in Amarkantak (Anuppur district) to its terminus in the districts of Barwani and Alirajpur. He claimed the entire campaign is to encourage cleanliness, safety, and conservation of the Narmada, focusing on unmet promises of Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to keep river effluents-free, women’s safety (on the banks), and curtail sand mining in the river.

The Sena would also be responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of all the ghats on the opposite bank of the river. The Shivraj Singh Chouhan administration will be under pressure from Congress to stop such freely flowing nullahs and sewers, as well as regions where river sand mining is out of control and endanger the river and its aquatic resources.

Encouragement of tree planting along riverbanks throughout the state is a crucial component of the entire effort.
