The commercial capital of Karnataka, Hubballi, and HQ of Southern Railways will soon have the world’s longest railway platform within a year.

Currently, the 1,366 meter-long platform at Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, where the head office of the north-eastern railway is located, is the longest railway platform in the world. The platform at Hubballi will become the longest platform now.

Chief Public Relations Officer of SWR, E Vijaya said, “At present, Hubballi has five platforms, and the number will be increased to eight. The inspection carriage line is getting converted to a full platform. Platform No. 1 will be extended from 550m to 1,400m with 10m width. At present, Gorakhpur’s 1,366m platform is the world’s longest facility”.

“Rs 90 crore is being spent on the works related to full yard, signaling, electrical and building. The work started in November 2019, will be completed in the next one year,” she further added.

She added that one more entry point is coming up at Gadag Road.

Hubballi is the headquarters of the South Western Railway (SWR) and is a major business centre in Karnataka. The station currently comprises only 5 platforms and is no spacious to handle the increasing number of trains and passengers. Both the lines coming in from Davanagere and Gadag are being doubled in a major infrastructure push to these areas which will allow an increase in the number of trains coming into Hubballi from both directions.

The construction work is likely to get completed in June 2021.
