Dashrath Manjhi redefined the contours of unadulterated love by breaking down the mighty mountain of Gehlaur village of Gaya district, Bihar, and paving a path out of it. It took him 22 years of hard work.

Similar to the Mountain Man, a man named Laungi Bhuiyan dug a five-kilometer long canal to alleviate the poverty of the people of Kothilwa village located on the border of Imamganj and Bankebazar block, Gaya. In 20 years, he excavated a five-kilometer-long, four-feet-wide and three feet deep canal.

With this, Laungi has helped the farmers to deliver water to their fields. Laungi could not tolerate the youth of the village leaving their family and moving to cities to earn a livelihood. He points out that 20 years ago, in the year 2001, he was saddened by the exodus. He noticed a huge source of water in the village and started to dig the canal, as per a report in Hindustan.

“When I started the excavation, people scoffed at me and call me crazy. However, it didn’t bother me”, Laungi said to Hindustan.

The officials of the Department of Water made a large weir to deposit water coming from the canal. Village chief Vishupat Singh Bhota said that he is seeking government help for the leftover work.
