Bihar: Even after 73 years of independence, it would be an exaggeration to say that there are no cases of assault, looting, theft, dacoity, etc. in a village. However, Katorwa village of Gonha block in West Champaran district is setting a similar example where not a single case has reached the police station since independence.
DGP Gupteshwar Pandey, the head of the state’s police department, on Monday, visited the villagers and communicated with the locals. He said that he had the curiosity to come to the village since he was aware of it. The very thought of visiting the village suddenly came in his mind while the DGP was on the morning walk.
Pandey said, “I am extremely happy to meet the people of Katorwa district. It is a matter of pride in itself that even after such a long time of Independence, this village is untouched by crime.
“All the villages across Bihar should learn from this village”, he further added.
Bihar is the top 4 states of India based on the crime rate. The state capital recorded the highest rate of murder among 9 metropolitan cities across the country in 2018, as per data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
The state also witnessed 179 incidents of human trafficking in 2018, involving 231 victims, which was the highest rate in India in the category.
However, according to the comparative data released by the state police headquarters, there has been an overall drop of 26% in the total number of cognisable offenses from April 1 to 15 compared to the corresponding period in 2019. murders witnessed a decline of 26% from April 1 to 15 this year. Cases of dacoity, loot, house burglary, and theft also dropped during the coronavirus lockdown.
Talking about the crime against women in the state, it has dropped severely. A total of 28 rape cases were registered in the state compared to 63 cases during the corresponding period last year. Likewise, the cases of atrocities against women dropped to 73 from 217 in 2019.
