Rajasthan: Thousands of migratory birds found dead near Sambhar Lake

In a highly shocking incident, more than thousand of migratory birds of at least 10 species were found dead around Sambhar Lake, the country’s largest inland saltwater lake near Jaipur, sending shock waves among locals and authorities.

After the dead birds were found inside the lake, the administration and the forest department reached the lake to find out the cause behind the deaths.

A medical team from Jaipur was also called to take the samples of the dead birds. The reports are expected to come within four-five days. Officials are yet to ascertain the cause of the deaths but suspect that the reason was a hailstorm that hit the area a few days ago.

Meanwhile, the injured and ailing birds were brought to the shore and treatment was administered to them. Local residents claimed the number of dead birds could be as high as 5,000.

According to the reports, the dead birds include the Northern Shoveller, Brahminy Duck, Pied Avocet, Kentish Plover and Tufted Duck, among others. The carcasses of 669 birds were buried in a ditch, while many still lay strewn around.
