According to police, four women and a child were killed and five others were injured when their vehicle collided with a pole and overturned on a highway in the Handia police station area of the district on Thursday morning.
The victims were on their way to Vindhyachal for a child’s ‘mundan’ ritual when the incident occurred around 5.45 a.m., according to Sudhir Kumar, Circle Officer of Handia.
Five people were killed on the spot, while five others were injured and rushed to a hospital, he said.
Rekha Devi (45), Krishna Devi (70), Savita (36), Rekha (32) and Ojas have been identified as the deceased (one-and-a-half-years old).
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his condolences to the families of those killed in the accident.
He also directed the district magistrate and other top district officials to arrive at the scene as soon as possible and ensure proper treatment of the injured.
