Odisha: Speaker Adjourns Assembly After Ruckus by Opposition Over Tribals’ Land Transfer Issue

On Thursday, the third day of the Winter Session, the Odisha Assembly witnessed wild scenes surrounding the topic of tribal land being transferred to non-tribals. Due to the disorderly situation in the House, Speaker Pramila Mallik adjourned the proceedings until 4:00 PM today.

It was challenging for the Speaker to conduct House business when opposition BJP lawmakers stormed the Well of the House shortly after it convened for the day’s sessions, brandishing placards and yelling slogans.

The Speaker of the House adjourned the session till 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday due to the commotion the opposition caused over the matter.

In order to hold a special discussion on the subject, we had moved a motion on Wednesday asking for the suspension of all legislative action. We continue to be steadfast in our demands even now. But the Speaker turned down our request. A BJP MLA and chief whip of the opposition, Mohan Majhi, made this demand to media outside the House: “We demand that the Chief Minister withdraw the decision regarding the land transfer rule.”
