Coronavirus: Bihar to adopt 'Icoma treatment' to curb COVID-19

Given the increasing COVID-19 cases in Bihar, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences(AIIMS) Patna, has decided to adopt a new system of treatment ‘Icoma’.

AIIMS Patna is the first hospital in Bihar to adopt the plasma therapy to treat coronavirus patients and has succeeded so far.

However, there are several cases wherein patients are facing difficulty in breathing, one of the severe symptoms of COVID-19. Due to a lack of ventilators, many succumbed to the infection.

With the implementation of ‘Icoma’, the recovery rate of corona patients in Bihar is likely to spike up.

According to Dr Sanjeev Kumar, the nodal officer on AIIMS, Patna, the Icoma method does not require patients to be taken to the ventilator. “Therefore, the use of Icoma across the country is being studied at AIIMS, Patna. It is being used in Bengaluru and Kolkata”, Dr Kumar said to Hindustan.

As per the reports, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), New Delhi will have to seek sanction for starting treatment in the Icoma system. However, the ICMR guidelines also mention the Icoma, but only after the study, the proposal will be prepared and permission to start treatment through this system of medicine.

Bihar on July 27, has reported 1,749 COVID-19 positive cases. The state’s total number of infections tally has surged to 43,591. The death toll has reached 255. According to the state health department, the capital city Patna has reported 411 fresh positive cases in the last 24 hours. 14,236 samples have been tested and 1,536 people have been recovered on Monday.
